Wedding Band, written by Alice Childress, directed by Jennifer Nelson, and subtitled A Love/Hate Story in Black and White, tells the story of a black woman’s struggle to keep her ten-year relationship with a white man alive. Set in South Carolina in 1918 when World War I was in full swing, the influenza epidemic was at its height, and sexual relationships between blacks and whites were outlawed, Wedding Band examines the barriers that society, family, and the law place between people who love each other. The play, originally produced at the Public Theater in New York, starred Ruby Dee. The cast of the Ford’s reading will include Erika Rose, Nancy Robinette, and MaConnia Chesser. No charge.
